Privacy Policy for Chat Navigator
Last Updated: January 8, 2026
1. Overview
Chat Navigator ("we", "our", or "the Extension") is a Chrome Extension designed to summarize and navigate AI conversations. We prioritize your privacy and have designed Chat Navigator to operate primarily on your device.
Chat Navigator supports two usage modes:
- Hosted mode (Account-based): You sign in and use Hosted credits/subscription. Requests are proxied through our backend to the LLM provider.
- BYOK (Bring Your Own Key): You provide your own OpenAI API key. Requests go directly from your browser to OpenAI.
2. Data Collection and Usage
2.1. Chat Content
- Collection: The Extension reads the text of the chat conversations you view on supported sites only when you explicitly interact with the Extension (e.g., by clicking "Generate Outline").
- Usage: Chat content is used solely to generate summaries/outlines.
- BYOK mode: Chat content is sent directly from your browser to the OpenAI API (
api.openai.com). - Hosted mode: Chat content is sent from your browser to our backend (e.g.,
chat-navigator.com) and then proxied to our LLM gateway/provider (LiteLLM → OpenAI).
- BYOK mode: Chat content is sent directly from your browser to the OpenAI API (
- Storage: We do not store your chat content in our primary application database. Generated outlines and notes are stored locally on your device using Chrome's
storage.localAPI. In Hosted mode, our LLM gateway (LiteLLM) may generate usage logs/records (see “Usage Logs & Analytics” below).
2.2. API Keys
- BYOK mode: If you choose BYOK, you provide your OpenAI API Key to the Extension.
- Storage: Your API Key is stored locally on your device using Chrome's
storage.localAPI. - Usage: It is used solely to authenticate requests to the OpenAI API on your behalf. We do not ask you to share this key with our servers.
- Storage: Your API Key is stored locally on your device using Chrome's
- Hosted mode: You do not need to provide an OpenAI API key.
2.3. Account & Billing Data (Hosted mode)
If you use Hosted mode, we collect and store limited account and billing-related data to provide the service and enforce quotas:
- Authentication (Clerk): We use Clerk to manage sign-in. Clerk may collect and store information such as your email address and authentication factors, depending on what you provide.
- Billing (Stripe): We use Stripe to process subscriptions. Stripe handles payment method details. We store Stripe identifiers (e.g., customer/subscription IDs) needed to manage your subscription.
- Usage & quotas: We store counters and metadata needed to enforce generation limits and prevent double-counting retries (e.g., generation counts, idempotency keys, subscription period boundaries). We do not store your chat message text in these records.
2.4. Usage Logs & Analytics (Hosted mode)
In Hosted mode, our LLM gateway (LiteLLM) generates logs/records that may include:
- request metadata (timestamp, model, token counts, cost/spend, success/failure)
- a pseudonymous account identifier (e.g., your Clerk user ID)
- depending on configuration, portions of request/response content
We use these logs to operate the service (usage limits, debugging, abuse prevention) and may use aggregated analytics derived from them to understand product usage and improve Chat Navigator.
2.5. Usage Data & Error Logs
- Collection: We use Sentry to collect error logs and basic usage data (e.g., performance metrics) to help us improve the Extension.
- Storage: This data is stored on Sentry's servers.
- Anonymity: We do not collect personally identifiable information (PII) in these logs. We explicitly strip console logs in production builds to prevent accidental data leakage.
3. Third-Party Services
3.1. OpenAI
In BYOK mode, the Extension communicates directly with OpenAI's API. In Hosted mode, our backend proxies requests to OpenAI. By using Chat Navigator, you are also subject to OpenAI's Privacy Policy and Terms of Use.
3.2. Clerk
We use Clerk for authentication in Hosted mode. By using Hosted mode, you are also subject to Clerk’s policies.
3.3. Stripe
We use Stripe to process subscriptions and payments in Hosted mode. Stripe handles payment method data. By using Hosted mode, you are also subject to Stripe’s policies.
3.4. LiteLLM / Cloudflare (Hosted proxy infrastructure)
Hosted mode uses LiteLLM as an internal gateway for usage tracking and spend budgets, and Cloudflare Access to protect internal endpoints. LiteLLM generates usage logs/records that may be used for analytics (as described above).
3.5. Sentry
We use Sentry for error tracking and performance monitoring. By using the Extension, you acknowledge that technical data may be processed by Sentry. Sentry Privacy Policy
4. Data Security
- Your BYOK API key, outlines, and notes are stored locally in your browser.
- In Hosted mode, we store limited account/billing identifiers and quota counters on our servers, and our LLM gateway may store usage logs/records.
- Communication with OpenAI and/or our Hosted backend occurs over secure, encrypted connections (HTTPS).
